Review Qualcomm Toq - Smartwatch for Android Smartphone

The Toq smartwatch represents a great step in the right direction for smartwatches. The display is excellent - low power, easy to see and read, and (moderately) colorful. It works really great in direct sunlight, and has a light you can turn on when in low light situations. The battery life seems to be great so far - when not being used, it barely goes down at all. This is mostly a result of the new display technology being used - it's very similar to the electronic ink you see in a Kindle ebook reader.

The downside to this new device is how Qualcomm built the watch. While the face itself is not large or necessarily bulky, the strap is quite uncomfortable in my opinion. Combine that with the fact that its currently NOT REPLACABLE, and you have to CUT the strap in order to initially size it. What a poorly thought out idea. I hope I don't gain any weight any time soon, as the watch may no longer fit my wrist. Also, I won't be able to sell it to someone with a larger wrist if I ever decide to do so in the future...

Functionality wise, the watch's main purpose is to display notifications from your Android phone to your wrist. This works great for the most part. For text messages, you can read the message and respond with some pre-defined quick responses. Phone calls can be answered or ignored right from the watch. However, you can't dismiss notifications that you receive from the watch. You still have to bring up the notification panel on your phone to dismiss them. For the most part, this works well - but it would be nice to have a little added interactivity with notifications. The included wireless charger works great.

The touchscreen is hit and miss. I had some taps that did not register at all - while other times it worked flawlessly. Again, this seems to be another area where the technology might need to develop a little bit.

Overall, I think the technology presented here with the Toq is a great step forward for smartwatches. The display technology and battery life are excellent. However, some poorly thought out design decisions (I'm looking at you, watchband), and what I would call an immature "operating system" make me say to hold off until the next generation from Qualcomm, unless the price on this drops dramatically.

Toq is compatible with Android smartphones (Android 4.0.3., Jelly Bean and above preferred). Toq is not compatible with iOS devices.

Review Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch

Samsung Galaxy Gear keeps you updated with glance notifications, so you can keep up with calls, texts and emails.
Compatible with Galaxy Note 3 and other Galaxy smartphones
1.63 inch Super AMOLED screen and 1.9 Megapixel camera
Place calls and answer them directly from your Galaxy Gear
Enjoy the S Voice personal assistant right on your wrist
Includes Samsung Galaxy Gear, wall charger, charging cradle, quick start guide
I am using this watch with the Note 3. The phone comes in packaging of the same style as the Note 3. In the box you'll find the watch, a Micro USB charger, the charging "cradle", and some manuals. Before being able to make use of the watch it is going to need to be charged; it had just enough power to tell me to charge it.
I let the watch charge to 100% and installed the application "Gear Manager" from the Samsung app store. Since Bluetooth and NFC were already enabled on my phone once the application was installed all I needed to do was tap the phone to the back of the charger. The devices discovered each other and I only had to click on OK on the phone and watch to complete the pairing.
As soon as the watch was paired I got to see alerts coming up on the phone and the watch; an incoming text message shows up on both. It's possible to select the notifications that will show up on the phone (SMS, E-Mail, Facebook, Google Hangouts, phone calls, and more). With setup complete I started using the watch. While you can have notifications show for almost any application one could divide the notifications into two groups. There are the notifications from the applications that Gear Manager recognize which let you see information on the notification (ex: the name of a person that send an instant message along with the content of the message) or those that contain no information other than the name of the application that is trying to notify you (ex:For a Facebook notification the watch will tell you to look at your device for details).
The watch has a single multi-purpose button on the right side and a touch screen. The button when double-pressed by default will cause the watch to start listening for a voice command. It can be changed as a short-cut for some other action. If you've already used S-voice on your phone then you already have an idea the commands that can be issued to it. "Call Jenny", "Text Jim", "What's the weather like?", "When's my next appointment." The command set that can be used is a subset of the S-voice command set. I've found that some commands (such as those centered on street navigation) can't be issued through the watch.
Any time I lift my arm to look at the watch it automatically detects this motion and turns on the screen. While this is generally just what I need it to do there are times when it turns on when I don't need to see the display, such as when I am driving. In general I take off the watch when I am driving and put it on its charger. It general recharges at a rate of slightly faster than 1% per minute.

There's an option to have the watch unlock the phone. With this option enabled once you walk more than several feet from your watch the screen automatically locks. When you come close to your watch it automatically unlocks.

Review Pebble Smartwatch for iPhone and Android

Control your Apple or Android device's functions from your wrist with this Pebble 301RD smartwatch, which features Bluetooth technology for easy pairing and an E-paper display that promotes visibility. The waterproof design ensures long-lasting use.
Features of Pebble 301RD smartwatch:
View notifications from email, SMS, Caller ID, calendar and your favorite apps on your wrist.
Download watch faces and apps to suit your style and interests.
Control music playing on iTunes, Spotify, Pandora and more.
Rechargeable battery lasts 5-7 days on a single charge
Compatible with both Apple and Android devices
This watch is great! I love being able to try different watch faces every day. There is an app so that I can even create my own watch face. So I did. It was easy to load it on an use it. I added it to the others on my Pebble.
I'm hard of hearing. Normally I need to have my phone on LOUD to hear it even with my hearing aids and sometimes I don't feel the vibrating alert on my phone. Other times I have my phone in the bedroom because I don't have it with me. Nevertheless, my Pebble will vibrate and tell me who is calling. Even 30 feet away. It is totally awesome. If I want to ignore the call I just click the button on the watch.
I also wear my Pebble running and occasionally in the shower or bath. Never a problem.
